Love... I'm no expert...

I am clearly not an expert on love. No more than anyone else, for that matter. That does not change the fact that my heart is probably too big for my body. We really can't choose who we love, that I do agree, but we can choose how we love, how we release the love that is inside of us. This not specifically a romantic type of love at all, even though it may people's 1st impression when reading this. We can not control who we love, but we can control how we love, how much, how deep & how often... yes, I am repeating myself a little, but it's my way of getting the point across.
Being in love gives us courage to put ourselves out there, but before we can love another - we MUST truly love ourselves. Otherwise, the love for another person is like using tin foil instead of stainless steel. Looks promising, but a person is really fooling themselves, if not selling themselves way short.
Was talking to an old friend from high school & these revelations hit me, so I wanted to share.

Something beautiful I came across...

"You’re not the breath I breathe, just the sweet scent that I enjoy. You’re not the sights I see, just the most beautiful of them. You’re not the water I drink, just the flavor that makes it taste so good. You’re not the ground I walk on, just the partner I sometimes lean on. You’re not the blood in my veins, just what makes it burn so sweetly. You’re not my life, just the one I want to spend it with. You’re not my world, just the best thing in it."

Why (7/23)

Why is it sometimes I feel like crying, but only want to be happy. Even I know it's ok to cry, it still feels bad before feeling good. Why does it hurt so badly in my heart? Tonight, I felt this & it made me want to cry again.
These questions are just rhetorical & have no real answers. Tomorrow is another day, another chance to do it differently. For today is for only one day.

What It Means To Be A Father…

6/16/10

“Dad, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever.” ~Author Unknown

Being a father is more than a title; in fact it is far more than a short description. From the moment one becomes a father, there is a certain feeling, instinct and identity that comes with being one.

I have to say that my earliest memories when my 1st daughter, Samantha, was born. When it was time for her to be born, I told Dr. James that “I’m going to cut the cord!” to which he replied “of course, David”. So then it was time to do that & I took it in stride. Then, it was my turn to hold Samantha & I remember crying at the beauty of this little baby in my hands. The smile on my face could have stretched an entire city block. It was quite a magical moment and nothing else mattered at that time.

When Brittany (my 2nd) was born, it was still very special, but she needed some medical attention after, so it was a little less of a happy moment. This was due to trauma in her airway and they needed to keep her for about a week in the hospital. This at first was a difficult thing, but I stood strong and dealt with it. Every night, I would come to the hospital after work. The time finally came for her to come home, but we would undoubtedly end up back in a hospital by the end of that year.
This is where being a father means being strong and sensitive at the same time. Pulling from strength to get through the rough patches, because life is not always a smooth operation and with children there are so many more things to consider. As if that was not enough drama, my 1st marriage was also not a happy one and I had been carrying that fact with me all the time.

“A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty.” ~Author Unknown

Nothing is perfect, but we try to make the best of what we have – so I thought. It came to a point where I could no longer keep living this way. I had such a hard time thinking about how dissolving a marriage would affect the children. Finally, I came to decision that either way; it will not be an easy thing. The strained relationship with their mother did not help this fact at all, but that is not what my story is about.

“Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad.” ~Author Unknown

After the dust settled, I was living back in the city again. Things changed and I got re-married. My 2nd wife had wanted a child. After my 1st marriage, I had a very strained relationship with my children, due to several issues – no other way to put it. It was fine with me, I love children and thought maybe having another beautiful baby would be good thing.

Well, the day my Chloe was born, it was truly exciting and that special feeling washed over me. I was all smiles and cut the cord (of course) after she was born. The feeling I had will never ever leave me, it is really not describable unless one has been there themselves. Holding her in my arms and looking down at her with so much love.
The bond that fathers form with their daughters is a lifetime one, I don’t know if this is the same with boys because I don’t have any.

“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.” ~Bill Cosby

There are so many experiences I have been through with my daughters and those are not replaceable. I try my best to be there for every concert, recital, event, etc… I do not want to miss a thing. Even though I have split my time up with the kids, I love them beyond the grasp of description and will always love them. Being a father has so many rewards, I could not even fathom comparing it to anything else.

"Old as she was, she still missed her daddy sometimes." ~Gloria Naylor

One is as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is a miracle."
Albert Einstein

"Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't and believe that everything happens for a reason. I Remember

I remember the moment when you were born. How I looked at you and thanked God for this beautiful child, as I held you in my arms for the first time. Your tiny hands & feet, your little bright eyes and tiny nose. It is hard to describe the feeling if holding one's baby for the first time, but I remember how it felt and will never forget.
Even today, when I look at my children - the wonderful feelings of love and joy still go through my mind. Even when they grow up, I will still think back to the very day they were born and holding them in my arms.

Alone, But Not Lonely

Being alone does not mean being lonely. In fact, if we love ourselves & can be by ourselves, then we are already in good company. Sometimes, it's nice having peace and quiet, time to reflect. Truth is, there will always be somebody out there thinking about us - so we are never really alone. I have spent so much time alone in the last year and 1/2, but I can not say there was a time I felt lonely. Maybe beyond that fact that I can stand myself, there are also all the virtual connections through social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc..); where I can have company if I choose to. Strange, but that is another way of reaching out to people, so never really feeling alone is a reality as well. Another thing one can consider, at least for me.

For today...

Sometimes, for me, it's a nice thing to reflect on how blessed we are. At least from my perspective, far as being alive, free, happy, healthy and able to pretty much do as we wish in the world as we know it. This does not include anything illegal obviously... having said that, just checking in with anyone who cares to read and being grateful for today.

Happiness...

Some wonderful quotes about happiness:

"Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves."
James M. Barrie

Seeing Old Friends & New Old Friends

The warmth of an old friends handshake and hug is irreplaceable.
Went to a really fun get together the other night in NJ. This was the first time I had seen some of these people since 1986.
Now it was a little overwhelming at first and of course my inclination was "who do I talk to first?!" I was over-excited and just kept smiling ear-to-ear all night.
The stories and laughter - it was so good to see everybody in person, because we all talk a lot online.
The night was filled with laughter actually and we all agreed we would try to do this kind of thing more often. For me, I hope we can, too. Good times.

Sometimes, making new friends is even better than eating chocolate!
Exploring the possibilities is like browsing. Taking actions make them into tangible realities.

Sweeter

There is nothing sweeter than falling asleep with your child - who has fallen asleep and waking up to watch them sleeping. Enjoying their sweet slumber, like little angels. It was so sweet the other day when Chloe fell asleep on my chest, all curled up & I did, too. When I woke up, she was still sleeping happily. This warms my heart and does again as I type this.

People We Meet

Did you ever stop an think about all the wonderful and amazing people you have met? From a teacher in school to the last person, who could have been a random person that you met on the subway.
Each person brings something unique into our lives and that makes a lasting impression on us. To me, that's the beauty of meeting people. They become part of our life's fabric and that is beautiful.

Thoughts for today...

In my 41 short years on this planet, I have been lucky enough to expereince many things. Some of them pleasurable, some very painful and some downright hilarious. Everyday is a new unpainted canvas, which I make mine to color, paint, graffiti, mark and ultimately let me life unfold. I try to learn from my experiences, share my lessons and live without predjudice or judgement of any kind. Life is beautiful, thanks for sharing your lives with me.
